Lighting the Tree and Sharing the Season in Groveville

Lighting the Tree and Sharing the Season in Groveville

This past Saturday, December 6th, Groveville UMC held our traditional Christmas Tree Lighting for our extended community, and it was a very special night. While we gathered outside in the crisp December air, we were reminded that we are called to be light in a world that seems to be covered in shadows. As the tree and the manger came to life with brightness, we sang beloved Christmas carols and read the story of Jesus’ birth, the real reason for the season and the hope that continues to break into our daily lives.

Afterward, we moved into the Fellowship Hall for another beloved tradition: hot chocolate, cookies, and a visit from Santa. Children and adults alike enjoyed the simple joy of gathering around tables, sharing sweets, and taking photos with the familiar figure who brings smiles every December.

Behind the modern image of Santa stands the story of Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Christian bishop known for his generosity, especially toward children and the poor. According to tradition, he secretly provided gifts, food, and help to families in need during the harsh winters. His compassion and quiet acts of kindness inspired the centuries-old tradition of gift-giving at Christmastime and continue to shape our celebrations today.

It was a beautiful evening of community, joy, and faith; the kind of night that reminds us why these traditions matter. May the light we shared on Saturday continue to shine through us in this season of hope!
